How Is a Light Steel Facade Built Up?
The layers of a light steel external wall, from inside out, are: steel stud → mineral wool inside the wall → OSB or cement-based sheathing on the outer face → water and wind barrier → and on the outside, the exterior cladding. So the cladding sits on top of a well-built insulation layer. That is why a light steel facade, done properly, can insulate better than reinforced concrete.
A facade is not only about looks — it is the first line of defenceprotecting the house from rain, wind and heat loss. A cheap, badly applied facade brings moisture and heat problems over the years. The barrier details behind the cladding matter as much as the cladding itself.
Option 1: External Insulation with Render (EIFS)
The most common option. EPS or rock wool insulation boards are bonded to the outer sheathing, mesh and render are applied, and the surface is painted. The result: the classic rendered and painted facade plus strong insulation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a light steel house be rendered so it looks like reinforced concrete?
Yes. With an EIFS system it is indistinguishable from a concrete house from the outside — you get a classic rendered, painted facade. The only difference is better thermal insulation.
Does the facade cladding affect the lifespan of the house?
Indirectly, yes. A good facade keeps water and moisture away from the frame and so protects the life of the galvanised steel. A facade with poor water protection is a source of problems in the long run. That is why the water and wind barrier behind the cladding matters at least as much as the cladding.
Can I change the facade later?
Yes. Siding, stone and panel systems can be removed and renewed. Render can also be overhauled and reapplied. The facade can be renewed without touching the frame.
